Are there any foods I should not be eating during pregnancy is a question that most pregnant women ask? Is this a question you have asked or are concerned about? I am sure that your medical practitioner would have handed you leaflets or given you plenty of advice on foodstuff, however, it never hurts to get more information.
There are certain foods that can pose a potential risk during pregnancy because certain bacteria could be present. For example, listeriosis, which is fortunately quite rare but still occurs in 1 out of 30,000 births in the UK. Nonetheless, listeriosis is avoidable. The foods that have been linked to high levels of this bacteria are:
Soft cheeses with skins, blue-veined cheese, unpasteurised cheese
All varieties of pate.
Also ensure that ready-cooked poultry and microwave meals are thoroughly heated to avoid bacteria.
These are foods that it would be wise to avoid during pregnancy. Once baby is born you can resume eating your cheeses of choice.
Still, it is worth noting that it is rare to get infections through food when you are pregnant, but very occasionally it can happen.
There is plenty of information on toxoplasmosis. This bacteria is found in raw meat (and cat faeces), so make sure any meat you eat is thoroughly cooked. If the family should have a cat or kitten, let someone else clean the litter tray and ensure hands are washed thoroughly. Also make sure you wash all salad and vegetables meticulously.
I can only reiterate that the risk of being infected with an illness because of food intake is minimal in pregnancy but, as they say, forewarned is forearmed.
